Congratulations to Harwell Primary School

Every year local schools take part in the Charlton Park Challenge Cup to see who can grow the greatest weight of potatoes from the tubers provided. This year the winner is Harwell School with a magnificent 3.65 kg. All the schools did really well this year and we have loved seeing your pictures. If we get the ok from the schools we will put up some of the photos of the kids enjoying the Challenge. Brownies Grow Their Own

It was lovely to welcome Wantage 1st Brownies to the garden centre this week. They planted up our Grow Your Own area with, amongst other things, runner beans, tomatoes and lettuce. Read More

New uses for Old Tools

Tool Shed April 2014 Thank you to all our customers who have brought in their old garden tools for refurbishment. Last month we sent a significant number to Wandsworth Prison where they will be repaired and repainted so that they can be used by local community projects. KIDS CHRISTMAS COMPETITION

Do you know someone under 14 years of age who would like to win a £20 voucher to spend in the Christmas Department this December? We have a Christmas tree that needs decorating and we are asking local children to make a decoration and put it on the tree in November. The decoration will need a label on it with name, age and an adult's contact details. The winner will be notified the first week in December. Read More

Orchid Day - Saturday 9th November

Come and meet Peter White, President of the Orchid Society of Great Britain. Peter will be holding a workshop between 10am and 4pm and giving talks on Orchid Care and Repotting at 11am and 2pm. Tickets for the talks are £5 but entitle you to a £5 discount on orchid products in the day. Tickets and further information available now in store. Read More

Children's Paint/Draw a Garden Bird Competition

We have had some fantastic entries in our competition. The shortlisted entries are now on display in the Garden Centre. Come and vote for your favourite. Voting closes lunchtime on Saturday 2nd November and winners will be announced at 3pm. Read More

Childrens Drawing/Painting Competition

DRAW OR PAINT YOUR FAVOURITE GARDEN BIRD Bring or post your entries to Charlton Park Garden Centre by 26th October 2013. Please put the childs name, age and a contact e mail address on the back. There will be 3 age groups -under 7 years old, 7 to 12 years and 12 +. The shortlisted entries will be on display in the shop for Half Term, from 27th October to 2nd November 2013. Customers will be able to vote for their favourite. Garden Furniture Sale Now On

The garden furniture sale starts 1st August with lots of great bargins but you will need to hurry as there is generally only one of each set available. We have reduced furniture from Hartman (see the Fire Pit on the home page), Kettler and Daro to name just a few. Read More

Charlton Park Challenge Cup

Winners announced Thank you to all the schools that took part in this year's Challenge to grow the most potatoes from the packs provided. As you can see from the picture below a good time was had by all! The winners in the Oxfordshire area were Stanford in the Vale Primary with a whopping 3.5kg. The winner in the West Berkshire area was Hermitage School with 1.3kg. Well done to everyone who took part. If the winners would like to send us their photos we would love to put them on our page. Building Work Starts at Charlton Park

During the coldest March on record (or so it looks) we have started a programme of building work and improvements at Charlton Park. The first part of this has been to replace the roof in the main part of the shop. Already we can see the benefit i.e. the snow and rain are not coming in through the new bit. The building work will cause a level of disruption for which we apologise. Please don't hesitate to ask if you are finding it difficult to find anything or you need assistance. Challenge Cup for 2013 Launched

The Challenge Cup is a gardening competition for local schools. It is in the memory of Mrs Dorothy Stevenson, know to many as Gran. Gran was very keen on gardening and would be pleased to see her enthusiasm being passed down to younger generations. She lived and worked at Charlton Park until she was 101 years old. Kids Events Spring 2013

Plant a Bottle Garden - Easter Holidays Wednesday 10th April 10am to 12pm and Thursday 11th April 2pm to 4pm Price £5 (including bottle garden and plants) A bottle garden is ideal for a kid's bedroom or a kitchen window sill. They will be able to plant up a 2 litre plastic bottle with mini plants to take home. Full care instructions will be given at the time. These are drop in sessions but last admission will be 20 minutes before the end. Some children may be able to do this without help but you will need to stay with them and enjoy the fun. French Seed Potato varities arrive

After what feels like a long wait the french variety seed potatoes are now arriving. When I counted this morning we had 98 different varities of seed potato in stock. If you are not sure what variety would suit you best you can buy loose tubers, allowing you to try out different varities. We are happy to recommend varieties to you, perhaps you have a particular type of soil or need a slug resistant variety. Just ask and we will help.Read More

Seed Potatoes

New varieties of seed potatoes are arriving every day now. The season has been slow to start and is approximately two weeks behind due to supply problems. The poor weather of 2012 has had an impact also on varieties that are available. If you are after a particular variety now is the time to buy before stocks start to run short.Read More
